2020 Year in Review

2020-Overview.jpg

Regina Cat Rescue (RCR) rescued 595 cats in 2020 – a new record. We also set a record in adoptions with 541 cats who were adopted throughout the year.

We trapped, neutered and returned 20 cats and continue to manage our 26 community cat colonies while also supporting 49 independently managed colonies.

As an entirely volunteer-run organization, this work was the result of thousands of volunteer hours. And as always, no cat left our care unsterilized meaning each animal was spayed or neutered before they were returned to the colony or off to their forever home.

To learn more about the year 2020, we checked in with our team leads.

Pet Rescue team:

  • We’re most proud to have been able to rescue nearly 600 cats in 2020. The intake demands always exceed our capacity, but we did our best to prioritize and help as many animals as we possible could while sticking to budget.

  • Because of this fiscal management, we were able to take on multiple cats requiring extra special care. This includes situations like a rare blood parasite, amputations, a broken jaw, double enucleations and ear polyp removal.

  • The biggest challenge we faced were the delays in sterilization surgeries as vet clinics restricted appointments due to COVID-19.

Community Cat team:

  • We’re proud to make and provide 120 winter shelters for stray and abandoned cats in and around Regina.

  • We were grateful to welcome six volunteer feeders to the team and an additional volunteer trapper, which was great since we trapped a record number of feral kittens in 2020.

  • One of our biggest challenges was the delay in ramping up the TNR&M program in the spring due to the limited vet appointments due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

Fundraising team:

  • This year we were challenged to adapt to the new fundraising reality as events were cancelled due to COVID-19. This meant the loss of revenue from the Western Pizza Booth at Mosaic Stadium events, cancellation of semi-annual fundraising dinners and most other in-person fundraisers.

  • But we were proud to adapt by offering new virtual options like online sales, classes, concerts and raffles. And we were touched to be recognized for these efforts by Association of Fundraising Professionals South Saskatchewan Chapter as an Outstanding Community Group in the 2020 National Philanthropy Day Awards.

  • Our dedicated team of sewers and other crafters also brought in significant funds by selling hundreds of non-medical masks, cat beds and blankets.

As we enter 2021, we want to take a moment to thank our Platinum Sponsor, Purina, and our Silver Sponsor, Metro Pet Market, for their ongoing support. And big thanks to you – our supports, volunteers and adopters! We will you all the very best for 2021!
