We currently need volunteers for the next bingo date of February 28th. There are two shifts: 6pm to 10pm, and 10pm to 2am.

Please contact our Volunteer Co-ordinator at jodyfrancais@hotmail.com or 757-9676.

PET EXPO 2009 AT THE CONEXUS ARTS CENTRE

People for Animals was an exhibitor at the very first Pet Expo held in Regina! We were fortunate enough to participate at no cost to us, and are grateful to the Conexus Arts Centre for arranging our participation. We had a wonderful time getting to know other pet lovers, introducing the public to some of the cats and kittens we brought along, and promoting the work of People for Animals in our community. Many thanks to the volunteers who worked at the table, and to all of the people who purchased our handmade catnip toys, became members, and made donations.

FERAL TEAM ACTIVITIES

In December, PFA began to feed and shelter feral and stray cats on a second route in North Central Regina. Each route has its own feeding team consisting of volunteers who each take one night of the week. The first route is very well established; our feral team has provided good quality shelters and sterilized the feral residents over the years. However, the new route requires a great deal of work to stabilize the populations and provide the feeding stations with the same kinds of resources. We have already trapped three kittens from the new route and placed them in foster care, along with a fragile three-legged black cat named Trinity. The feral team also rescued two tame cats who have not been claimed by their owners. Plans are now underway to start trapping, sterilizing, and releasing the feral residents on the new route in the spring.

URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS IN CATS

Urinary tract infections are quite common and can be a particular problem for cats that are under stress, as is the case with many rescued cats. It is important to know the signs of urinary tract problems and take action quickly – urinary tract problems can lead to life threatening urethral obstructions, particularly in male cats. The following are common symptoms of a urinary tract infection:
· Urination outside the litter box. This is often mistaken for
a behavioural problem
· Vocalization when urinating is a sign of difficult or
painful urination
· Increased visits to the litter box and decreased volume of
urine production
· Straining to urinate and prolonged urination
· Blood in the urine
· Excessive cleaning of genital areas

Prevention
· Include canned, soft food in the cat's diet
· Provide a stress-free environment
· Provide an adequate number of clean, uncovered litter boxes
· Prevent cats from becoming overweight by monitoring diet and
providing play activities
· Ensure adequate places to rest and relax, especially in a
multiple-cat household
